Wildlife in the area includes white-tailed deer, gray squirrel, coyote, raccoon, gray and red fox, bobcat and striped skunk. The forest is a mix of hickories, oaks, shortleaf pines, sugar maple and sweet gum. Elevations range from a high around 1,020' to a low around 680' on the North Fork River. For the most part it is an easy ride, but some sections require an experienced rider. The trail has some steep rocky switchbacks and a few steep grades. Campsites with water are located at Handy Springs and Windy Camp. When the wilderness area was designated in 1980 it was named for a prominent ridge running through the center of the area. This route traverses the crest of Devil’s Backbone and provides outstanding viewing opportunities. From here you can continue onto the Blue Sky Trail and Indian Summer Trail.Devils Backbone Wilderness is a 6,595-acre property on Mark Twain National Forest. The trails meet back up after 1/2 mile or so and then climbs to the top of the ridge. The west half of the loop, while challenging, is rideable by most, while the east half of the loop is black-diamond difficult and will require most riders to push a few sections with large rock drops and obstacles.
